Termites in Homes

If you’re a homeowner, the last thing you want is to find out that your house is infested with termites. Not only are they destructive pests, but they can be difficult (and expensive) to get rid of. Luckily, there are some things you can do to prevent termites from taking up residence in your home in the first place.

Keeping Termites Away

Here are four best practices for keeping termites away:

1. Keep your gutters clean and clear of debris.

Clogged gutters provide a perfect environment for termites, as they retain moisture and offer protection from the elements. Be sure to clean your gutters regularly, or better yet, install gutter guards to keep them from getting clogged in the first place.

2. Give your foundation a visual inspection periodically.

Look for any cracks or openings that could allow termites access into your home. These should be sealed up as soon as possible to prevent an infestation.

3. Store firewood at least 20 feet away from your house.

Termites are attracted to wood, so storing it close to your home is just asking for trouble. If you must store firewood on-site, make sure it’s elevated off the ground and not touching any part of your house (including the foundation).
